Skin Cancer

Dr. Howard Kaufman, director of the Rush Cancer Program at Rush University Medical Center, was featured in a Chicago Tribune story on May 26 entitled "Ganging Up on Skin Cancer." The story profiled one of Dr. Kaufman's patients and discussed efforts to create a collaboration across several academic medical institutions in the city to fight melanoma.

Dr. Julie Moore, dermatologist at Rush University Medical Center, was interviewed by FOX-32 News about the sunscreen safety guide on May 24.

Less Invasive Bunion Procedure

Dr. George Holmes, Jr., director of foot and ankle at Rush University Medical Center, was on WGN-9 News at 9 p.m. on May 21. The feature story highlighted a new, less invasive procedure for bunions called the Mini-TightRope, which was developed at Rush. Holmes also was interviewed by HealthDay about the TightRope bunion procedure. The story was picked up by numerous media outlets including USNews.com and MSN.com.

Anterior Eye Infections

Rush University Medical Center was on ABC-7 News at 5 p.m. on May 21. The story highlighted a major donation made to Rush so that the medical center can get a special piece of equipment used to diagnose anterior eye infections.

Dr. Julie Moore, dermatologist at Rush University Medical Center, was on ABC-7 News at 10 p.m. on May 20. The story was about melanoma and pre-cancerous skin conditions.

Elderly Care in Haiti
Dr. Martin Gorbien, director, Section of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care, and Lauren Kessler, LCSW, at Rush University Medical Center, was followed by AARP Bulletin during their trip to Haiti in March. The photo essay appearing in the magazine on May 13 highlighted Gorbien and Kessler as they provided care for elderly residents in the wake of the devastating earthquake. AARP has a circulation of over 24 million, one of the largest in the world.

Dr. Laurence Levine, urologist at Rush University Medical Center, was interviewed on CBS-2 News on May 13 about new research in California to develop a birth control gel for men.

AVM Clinical Trial
Dr. Michael Chen, neuroendovascular surgeon, Rush University Medical Center, was quoted and photographed in a Chicago Sun-Times article on  May 11. The story highlighted a new, international, multicenter, NIH-funded trial at Rush called, “A Randomized Unruptured Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (ARUBA),” which is the first randomized, clinical study to evaluate whether a hands-off approach or intervention using any combination of endovascular, neurosurgical or radiation therapy is better for managing an abnormal vessel malformation of the brain that has not ruptured.

Prostate Cancer Vaccine
Dr. Dennis Pessis, associate chairman of urology, was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story April 30 regarding the prostate cancer vaccine, Provenge, which received FDA approval. Dr. Pessis also appeared on CBS-2 on April 26.

Block by Block Campaign
The Block by Block Campaign to fight diabetes, a collaboration with community groups in Humboldt Park, was featured in articles in the Chicago Sun-Times and the  Chicago Tribune. Dr. Steven Rothschild, who is the principal investigator for the NIH-supported intervention, is quoted in both stories. Dr. Rothschild was also interviewed by Telemundo and Univision about the Block by Block campaign. The Telemundo story aired April 23 and featured the opening of the Greater Humboldt Park Community Diabetes Empowerment Center, which will be the headquarters of the campaign. The Univision story aired April 28.

Cochlear Implants
Dr. Mark Wiet, chief of otology, neurotology and lateral skull base surgery, is quoted in a WebMD story on a study showing that cochlear implants can be beneficial for hearing-impaired children younger than 18 months.

Angela Johnson, Chinese medicine practitioner, Rush University Medical Center, was quoted in a feature story in the Chicago Sun-Times on April 14. The story highlighted the pediatric acupuncture study at Rush.

Dr. William Scheftner, chairman of psychiatry services, Rush University Medical Center, was on FOX-32 News at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 to talk about a new study that suggests indoor tanning may be addictive.

Duke Han, PhD, neuropsychologist at Rush University Medical Center, was quoted in a HealthDay News story on Monday, April 5. The article highlights a new study that shows older adults are better able to deal with social conflict than younger people.  
 
Breastfeeding Best for Baby
Paula Meier, PhD, director for clinical research and lactation, Rush's Mother's Milk Club, was on CBS-2 News on Monday, April 5 at 5 p.m. to discuss breastfeeding. A new study was published in Pediatrics and it discussed the health and cost benefits of breastfeeding. 

Flexible Shoes Better for Knees
A study by Dr. Najia Shakoor, rheumatologist, on how shoes with flexible soles are easier on the knees has appeared in several news reports across the country, including WebMD.

22 Pound Tumor
Dr. Christopher Coogan, urologist, Rush University Medical Center, was on CBS-2 News on Thursday, March 25, to discuss a large tumor case that came to Rush University Medical Center.  A patient had a 22-pound tumor removed from her abdomen. 

Melanoma Vaccine
Dr. Howard Kaufman, director of the Cancer Program at Rush University Medical Center, was on CBS-2 News on March 17. In the featured segment, Dr. Kaufman discusses a promising new treatment for melanoma called OncoVex being studied at Rush. 

Sleep and Daylight Savings Time
James K. Wyatt, PhD, director of the Sleep Disorders Service and Research Center, Rush University Medical Center, appeared on ABC-7 News live and in-studio on March 10 to discuss sleep and daylight savings time. 

Osteoporosis Drugs
Dr. Sheila Dugan, physical medicine and rehabilitation expert at Rush University Medical Center, appeared on ABC-7 News at 10 p.m. on March 10 to discuss the potential risks of long-term use of osteoporosis drugs. 

Live Colonoscopy
Dr. Abhitabh Patil, gastroenterologist at Rush University Medical Center, appeared on CBS-2 News at March 9 to discuss colonoscopies. Harry Smith from CBS underwent a live colonoscopy and Dr. Patil explained the procedure to local CBS-2 reporter Roseanne Tellez. 

Pediatric Acupuncture
Dr. Paul Kent, pediatric hematologist and oncologist at Rush University Medical Center, was on WGN-9 News on March 5 at 9 p.m. Dr. Kent discussed a new study being held at Rush where pediatric patients with chronic pain are being treated with acupuncture therapy.

Nursing GEM Program
Rush GEM in Nursing student Adam Grey was featuring in a special segment on the ABC-7 10 p.m. news Feb. 22 about people who changed careers due to the rough economy.

Pediatric Choking Hazards
Dr. David Walner, pediatric ENT, was interviewed on the CBS-2 10 p.m. news Feb. 22 speaking about the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that some foods that are choking hazards, like hot dogs, have warning labels. The story also aired on a number of CBS stations nationally.

Dr. Anabelle Volgman, director, Rush Heart Center for Women, was interviewed live on the ABC-7 morning news February 22 to discuss women and heart disease and the "Go Red" campaign.

Cardiac Syncope
Dr. Kousik Krishnan, director, Arrhythmia Device Clinic, was interviewed on the ABC-7 10 p.m. news on February 18th about cardiac syncope.

Repeat C-sections
Dr. Howard Strassner, chairman of OB/GYN, was quoted in the Chicago Tribune healthblog on February 20th about repeat C-sections.

HIV in the African-American Community
Dr. Kimberly Smith, infectious disease, was quoted in a MedPage Today story that was published on the ABC National website on February 19 about the high prevalence of HIV among African Americans.

Dual Transplant
On Feb. 17, CBS-2 featured a story on Rush's first-ever dual transplant, in which a 69-year-old patient received both a heart and a kidney. Dr. Robert Higgins, director of cardiovascular-thoracic surgery, was interviewed.

New MS Drug Ampyra
On Feb 17., WGN's Medical Watch segment aired a story on a new drug, called Ampyra, to treat walking impairment in multiple sclerosis patients. Dr. Dusan Stefoski, director of Rush's Multiple Sclerosis Center, was interviewed for the story.  He and Dr. Floyd Davis, former director of the center and now retired, discovered the drug's clinical benefits in the 1980s.

Medical Mission to Haiti
Dr. Stephanie Wang, internal medicine, appeared live on WTTW's Chicago Tonight program on February 17 to discuss the recent medical mission to Haiti.

Dr. David Ansell, chief medical officer, was interviewed by WBEZ/Chicago Public Radio about the medical mission to Haiti on WBEZ's "848" program.  

 

Return from Haiti
The first team of Rush medical experts that deployed to Haiti to help earthquake victims returned home February 3 and CBS-2, WGN-9, Univision, Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times went out to O'Hare Airport to meet the team as they reunite with their families and friends. The story also aired on NBC-5 News at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3. 

Dr. Jennifer Towbin, hospitalist, Rush University Medical Center, was interviewed on Good Day Chicago on FOX-32 News on February 4. During the live, in-studio interview, she discussed her experience in Haiti. 

Alzheimer's Gene Variant
A study by Duke Han, PhD, a neuropsychologist in the Department of Behavioral Sciences, was the focus of a story in New Scientist Feb 17. The study showed that, paradoxically, young people with a gene variant that increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's have better memory than their peers. 

Women's Boards
The Chicago Tribune published a story in the Sunday, Feb. 14 issue about Woman's Board that included information about the Rush Woman's Board and a photo in front of the new hospital construction.

Women's Heart Health
Dr. Annabelle Volgman, director of the Heart Center for Women, Rush University Medical Center, was quoted in Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday, February 3, on women's heart symptoms and how they differ from men's heart symptoms. 

Childhood Obesity Prevention
Dr. Cathy Joyce, pediatrician, Rush University Medical Center was quoted in an Associated Press story on February 1 that featured the Childhood Obesity Prevention program at Rush. An AP writer, video journalist and photographer followed a family, who has been participating in the the study for over a year.  

Mission to Haiti
Dr. Jeff Mjaanes, pediatric orthopedic expert at Rush University Medical Center, was on WBBM-AM on February 1 from Haiti, where he is treating earthquake victims.  

Dr. David Ansell, chief medical officer, Rush University Medical Center, was quoted in two Reuters articles Feb 1.  Dr. Ansell was with the first team of medical experts that deployed to Haiti to help earthquake victims. Article 1 and Article 2

Second Medical Mission to Haiti
A second team of physicians and nurses from Rush are in Haiti to help earthquake victims. Dr. Jamil Bayram, emergency medicine, was interviewed by WGN-TV and WLS-TV on January 29. The story was also picked up by the Associated Press.

Chicago Health and Aging Project
Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, director of the clinical trial section at the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center, Rush University Medical Center, was interviewed by CBS-2 News for a feature story spotlighting the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP) study. The story aired January 12. 

Social Rejection
A study by Dr. Clark McKown, a researcher at the Rush Neurobehavorial Center, has identified three key factors in children's behavior which can lead to social rejection. McKown is quoted in a story on the website About.com.

Deep Brain Stimulation
Dr. Roy Bakay, neurosurgeon, is featured in an article on the Medill Wire Service about Deep Brain Stimulation, a surgical process the uses implanted electrodes to stimulate specific parts of the brain. It is currently being used to treat epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

Enlarged Hearts in Athletes
Dr. Kousik Krishnan, cardiac electrophysiologist, is quoted in a Medill Wire Service story about the positives and negatives regarding screening athletes for enlarged hearts.

H1N1: Back from the Brink of Death
Rush was featured in a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune on January 27 detailing the extraordinary measures of the medical team in the intensive care unit to save the life of a patient who was stricken with a severe case of H1N1 flu. Critical care specialist Dr. Omar Lateef and internist Dr. Jeffrey Nekomoto, are included in the story.

Healthy Foods for the Heart
Jennifer Ventrelle, RD, was quoted in a Chicago SunTimes story on January 26 about healthy foods for the heart.

Hospitals with Low Mortality Rates
Rush is mentioned in a story published January 26on  Forbes.com about hospitals with low mortality rates.

Glucomannan Weight Loss Study 
Joyce K Keithley, DNSc, RN, professor, College of Nursing, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal on January 19. Keithley discusses a recently completed study at Rush that found a modest weight loss benefit in patients takings glucomannan, a fiber dietary supplement.

Sudden Cardiac Death
Dr. Ziyad Hijazi, director, Rush Center for Congenital and Structural Heart Disease, was interviewed on the ABC-7 news January 18 about the death of Chicago Bears player Gaines Adams, which was apparently caused by an enlarged heart.

New Hospital
A profile of Dr. Larry Goodman, CEO, and the Rush Transformation is the focus of an article in the January 18 issue of Crain's Chicago Business.
