Paula Meier, director of clincal research and lactation, was quoted in a front-page Chicago Tribune story on July 24 featuring the Rush Mothers Milk Club and the first male to be certified as a volunteer breast milk peer counselor Henry Hale.  To read the story, click here

Epilepsy Drugs and Birth Risk
Dr. Andres Kanner, associate director of the Rush’s Epilepsy Center, was quoted in a USA Today story on July 22.  Dr. Kanner was the expert asked to comment on the findings of a recent study published in the journal Neurology.  The study findings indicate that epilepsy medication topiramate may increase newborn’s risk of birth defects if taken by pregnant women.  To read the story, click here

Fragile X Syndrome
Research being conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Berry-Kravis, pediatric neurologist, on a possible medical therapy to help improve learning and memory in fragile X patients was spotlighted in the July issue of TIME magazine.  To read the story, click here

Memory Boosting Foods
A study by Martha Clare Morris, ScD, assistant provost for community research at Rush, was mentioned in a July 8 article on the TODAY show website.  The article was on memory boosting foods and mentioned the Rush study’s findings that eating fish can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.  To read it, click here.

Travel Immunizations
Dr. Kamaljit Singh, infectious disease specialist, was quoted in a Chicago Tribune article on July 6 about travel medicine and immunization clinics. To read the article, click here.   

Common Injuries in Children
Dr. Dino Rumoro, acting chairman of the department of emergency medicine, appeared on the ABC 7 morning news segment "Connect with Kids" on June 30 to provide tips for dealing with common injuries in children.  To read the transcript, click here.   

Severe Food Allergies
Dr. Mary Kay Tobin, allergy and immunology, appeared on the ABC 7 news on June 26 to discuss eosinophilic esophagitis, a complicated disorder that involves intense inflammation of the esophagus. In the wake of journalist Tim Russert's Death, Dr. Annabelle Volgman, cardiology, appeared on FOX 32's Good Day Chicago on June 23 to raise awareness about heart disease. Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, appeared live on the ABC 7 4:30 p.m. news on June 19 to discuss golfer Tiger Woods' season ending knee injury. Phil Janicak, MD, psychiatry, was featured in a report on ABC 7 on May 15 about the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of depression. Dr. Janicak has been studying TMS for 11 years and has published several studies on the subject. To see the report, click here.
