Program Description

At Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, we offer a range of standard and investigational therapies for the treatment of cancer. We have more than a dozen programs specializing in the treatment of specific cancers, including:

Cancer Screening and Prevention
Cancer screening and prevention are priorities at Rush. Through genetic testing, counseling and advanced techniques for early detection, Rush helps people with a strong history of breast, ovarian, colon and other cancers. And in our state-of-the-art mammography center, we have one of the Chicago area's finest teams of radiologists dedicated to early detection of breast cancer.

Cancer is not only a physical ordeal, it is also an emotional one, affecting cancer patients, their family and friends. To help address the whole person, we offer a number of resources to help patients and their loved ones cope in this difficult time.

Clinical Trials
Rush offers a number of clinical trials of experimental cancer treatments. Use the links below to search for studies for a particular form of cancer. Our Annual Report
Rush strives to improve access to information on cancer program resources and services for the public. Rush releases its Cancer Program Annual Report in a Web-based format (see link at right to download in PDF format) and collaborates with the American Cancer Society in a voluntary data-sharing project, the Facility Information Profile System. Rush voluntarily submits information to the National Cancer Database, which allows us to monitor national trends and compare our program with others.

Services Provided

rush_852.gifRush cancer programs are approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Only one in four hospitals that treat cancer receive this special approval.

At Rush, we offer a range of standard and investigational therapies for the treatment of cancer, including:

Systemic Therapy: We offer a full range of treatments, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy and newer targeted therapies.

Radiation: Standard and advanced radiation therapies are available, including TomoTherapy, external beam radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.

Surgery: A full range of standard cancer surgeries are offered for the diagnosis and treatment of many forms of cancer. Whenever possible, surgeons use minimally invasive techniques to remove tumors.

Bone marrow transplant/stem cell transplant: The Rush Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Center is fully accredited for allogeneic and autologous bone marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation.

Clinical Team

At our specialized cancer centers and programs, patients receive care from teams of specialists, including medical oncologists, hematologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists and other cancer specialists. These professionals work together to design comprehensive treatment plans to match each patient's needs. Here, a highly skilled team of professionals creates individualized treatment plans for women with lumps, abnormal mammograms, or a family history or diagnosis of breast cancer.

Coleman Foundation Chest Tumor Clinic: Patients who visit the Chest Tumor Clinic at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, meet with a heath care team that assesses each patient, develops a treatment plan and ensures a continuum of care.

Partnership for Prevention at Rush University Medical Center: The mission of the Partnership for Prevention Program at Rush University Medical Center is to meet every smoker "where you are" and provide the most effective assistance medical science has to offer to help you in your pursuit of health.

Patient Navigator: The Rush Cancer Resource Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is staffed by a patient navigator, an employee of the American Cancer Society. The navigator meets with patients and family members either by phone or in person to assess individual needs and provide the necessary support.

Rush Inherited Susceptibility to Cancer Center: The Rush Inherited Susceptibility to Cancer Program counsels people on their personal and family risks for developing cancer, and provides information on prevention and early detection.

Skin Cancer Detection and Treatment Programs: Screening, early detection and prevention of skin cancer are priorities at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dermatologists, medical oncologists and surgeons examine patients for early signs of malignancy or premalignant lesions. At Rush, we also put a high emphasis on prevention.
