This is a study comparing two dietary interventions among individuals with high serum triglycerides. Patients will be randomly assigned to follow either a low carbohydrate diet or a diet that consists of 15% carbohydrate or the standard Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) diet recommended by the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Patients will receive instruction on diet, sample meal patterns and recommended foods from a registered dietician, and are required to consume these diets at home for a period of eight weeks.
Compliance to the diet will be measured by comparing two 24-hour recalls taken prior to the study with two 24-hour recalls taken during the study. To measure serum triglycerides, blood samples will be obtained prior to the study and at study completion.
The goal of the study is to compare the before and after blood measurements of individuals on each diet to see if the 15% carbohydrate diet produces lower triglyceride measures than the standard TLC diet. Patient compliance to each diet will also be assessed by the dietary analysis of the 24-hour recalls.
